The hacker created a script to find configuration files that were incorrectly configured, which made them readable. The hacker then got the configuration files with the wrong permissions, and gained database credentials. After that the hacker changed the siteurl parameter to point to a malicious site. Network Solutions fixed the problem in a process that involved changing passwords for the WordPress databases hosted on it's systems.
