Control Your Web Hosting Account

Business owners are busy.  If you own your own business, you know that.  It can be easy to get swamped with all the details of running a business, especially all the details of creating and keeping your website up.

It makes sense to outsource website tasks like web design and website coding.  Using a pro to do the work and saving your time for what you're good at can be a good business strategy.

Here's one thing you shouldn't outsource:  Your domain registration and purchase of web hosting.

Control Your Web Hosting Account

Leaving domain registration and web hosting purchase to others could cost you in the long run.  Why?

A big concern is the registration of your domain. Your domain name is your web address, and what you need to understand is that whoever registers the domain is considered the owner. This means that design firms and website builders who do this on behalf of clients aren’t doing them any favors.  It's your domain, and the ownership should be in your name, not your web designer's or web coder's name.

What if your web designer decides to move to Hawaii without alerting their clients? What if they give up the business entirely? What will you do if you need to contact them to make changes on your site, buy a SSL Certificate or other tasks that involve ownership of the domain in question?

You won’t be able to do it. You won’t even be able to login, even if you know where the hosting account is, and the proper usernames, passwords, etc. The web host will ask for all of this as a prelude for any help they provide you for this site, and if you can’t verify that you are indeed the owner, you are in trouble!

The bottom line here is to purchase your own URLs, and secure your own web hosting. Also make sure you’re not hosting at the same place you purchased your domain name. This makes matters less complicated if you decide to change hosts. Then you can give access as you need to, but at least you’re not stuck if people move on.

It's okay to get feedback on where to buy web hosting from your hired professionals, just you make the actual purchase.  And it's a bad idea to host your website with the same person who built it.  Don't give too much power to your website creator.  If there's a business disagreement in the future, they could hold your website hostage.

Also, make sure you have rights to the look & feel of your website and the pages created.  Don't let the web designer hold rights to your website that you've paid them to create.

Who and how you give access to your website is also important.  Giving someone the log in to your website can be scary. Make sure that the people you allow to use the log ins and passwords are trustworthy, and that they are doing only what you need and have asked them to do. It’s not unheard of for people to sift through sensitive data on your site, and use it for purposes other than what you have intended.

It’s also a good idea to change passwords frequently if you have a number of people in your back office. You should do this periodically anyway, just as a general security precaution, as hackers are about!

How To Hacker Proof Your Website

Web hosts spend a lot of time and money on security.  They should, it's their job to ensure the safety of the websites on their hosting servers.

Hackers know this.  So instead of targeting the web hosts with their malicious intent, they target individual web sites.  More specifically, hackers go after websites by targeting the webmaster.

A hacker goes after a webmaster by downloading a virus onto the webmaster's computer which harvests FTP login details that are often stored as an uprotected file within software like Filezilla.

Once a hacker has access to your website, they can do a number of things including:

- Insert links in to your site & create link farms
- Capture your member’s information
- Links to malware
- Spread viruses
- Destroy your site

How to Hacker Proof Your Website

Keep your virus protection software up-to-date.  In fact, set the virus protection software settings to automatically update when you're asleep at night.

Don’t store log in details on your local PC unprotected.  In other words, don't store in the FTP software’s auto log in.  Manually logging in to your FTP will add like 10 seconds to your routine.  Get over it.  This is time well spent if it means your site in not compromised.

Regularly change your FTP password with a strong, and ideally random, password using capitals, numbers and extra characters. Disable FTP access when you don’t need it.

Follow these steps to keep your website hacker proof via the hacker strategy of targeting the webmaster.

Secure Web Hosting: Avoid Being Hacked

How to avoid being hacked?

PHP applications get hacked quite often.  Help avoid getting hacked by using the most current version of PHP.  Most bugs are file inclusions or traversals, XSS, cookie manipulations, XSRF, SQL Injection. However, a lot of these vulnerabilities must pair up with an older version of PHP in order to work "properly".  So keep your PHP version up to date.  In addition make sure your PHP is configured properly.  A poorly configured PHP install creates a vulnerability as well.

Hacker Center website did a comparison chart of the security features of the top shared web hosting companies.  They actually contacted the hosts and asked them about every feature.

Which web host did well for security features?

HostGator did.  Hacker center found no known security incidents. HostGator uses Spam Assassin antivirus, antispam software as well as one of the only shared web hosts that has a secure POP3. Hostgator also offers shared SSL for ecommerce included in the hosting price.  A dedicated SSL is available for $12/month with their business hosting package.

If you're concerned about website security, but still want a great price, go with HostGator.

HostGator offers free website transfers.

WordPress Problems At Network Solutions

If you're creating a blog, this is why you want to buy web hosting from a host that specializes in WordPress. BlueHost Blog Web Hosting is and example of a host great with WordPress.

Security firm Sucuri Security recently found a configuration flaw in WordPress blogs hosted at Network Solutions.  The flaw lead to hundreds of WordPress blogs at Network Solutions being compromised.  Netsol deployed a massive fix to repair the issue earlier this week.

The problem was with file permissions that were configured on Network Solutions hosting servers.  The hacker created a script to find configuration files that were incorrectly configured, which made them readable.  The hacker then got the configuration files with the wrong permissions, and gained database credentials.  After that the hacker changed the siteurl parameter to point to a malicious site.

Network Solutions fixed the problem in a process that involved changing passwords for the WordPress databases hosted on it's systems.  If you have a WordPress blog hosted at Netsol, it's recommended that you change your administrative passwords ...

... and then you should strongly consider moving your WordPress website to a host like BlueHost that specializes in WordPress.

How To Choose Blog Web Hosting

You are a smart new blogger.  You know it's better to have your blog on your own domain from the start.  But picking the right web host for your blog can be more complicated.  This article will help make the choice easier.

Shared web hosting will most likely do the trick.  Plus, it's cheap.

I know you're excited about your new blog and expect it to do well.  But, cloud hosting is just way too much hosting than you'll need right now.  So is a dedicated server.  Save your pennies and invest in great content.  When your blog starts climbing the Alexa ranks and traffic is skyrocketing, then you can look into the more expensive options.

For now, shared web hosting more than fulfills your need.

How do you choose what shared web host is best for your blog?

Disk Storage - most shared hosting deals come with unlimited disk space.  Mostly this is good marketing by the web hosts, as they know all you'll most likely use is less than 500MB.

Bandwidth - again most shared hosting deals come with unlimited bandwidth.  If your traffic spikes, bandwidth won't usually cause a bottleneck.  CPU usage will.

CPU Usage - The limitation of your account's CPU usage is what makes unlimited hosting limited.  Good shared web hosts will allow you 5-10% CPU power.

Server Uptime - Getting a server that has 100% uptime is basically impossible.  Servers need upkeep, for which they need to be taken down.  Uptime of greater than 97.5% is good.  If you can get uptime greater than 99% from shared host you've found a really good one.

Pricing - Most quality shared hosts are less than $10/month now days.  Above that is over priced, you can get a better deal.

BlueHost is the best Blog web hosting we've found based on the criteria above.  Read our more extensive BlueHost Blog Hosting Review here, or get your web hosting from Bluehost now.

Good luck!
